National Statistics on Sexual Violence


Every 2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted.

Sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, with 54% still being left unreported. Factoring in unreported rapes, only about 3% of rapists will ever serve a day in prison.

1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime.

1 in 6 men have survived some form of sexual abuse in childhood.

Nearly 1 in 2 women have experienced sexual violence other than rape at some point in their lives. This equates to more than 53 million women in the U.S.

Nearly 1 in 5 men (or 25 million) have experienced sexual violence other than rape at some point in their lives in the U.S.

Children:

15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12

Four out of five cases of child sexual abuse occur by someone known to the child

Incest is more common than most people dare believe. Clinicians and researchers estimate that one million or more children under the age of 18 are currently involved in incestuous relationships.

Who Are the Offenders?

Approximately 2/3 of rapes were committed by someone known to the victim.

73% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by a non-stranger.

38% of rapists are a friend or acquaintance.

28% are an intimate partner.
